Can the dogs be wrong?

The dogs are seldom wrong, and handlers are trained to double check the dogs work. Besides observing the visual cues the dogs give off, handlers will often give the dog a break and research a room to insure that the dog indicates the presence of drugs in the same location on the second search. Even if a dog indicates on an area however, there may not be drugs there. Just like a person putting on perfume, the scent of drugs can stay in an area for weeks after the drugs have been removed depending on the quantity of drugs that were stored in the location and how long they were stored there. Scheduling a second search at a later date ensures that the odor dissipates and the drugs are no longer there.

How often should I have a search done?

This depends on each unique situation. Sometimes when specific individuals are at high risk for repercussions it maybe necessary to perform a search as often as once a week. While other times having a single search done will stop use all together. The real answer to this is when you feel comfortable and confident that your children or employees have completely stopped their drug use.
